​Aspiring young builders and innovators recently gathered at Brixton Multipurpose Centre for the Youth in Construction Summit, a dynamic platform to shape the future of the construction industry.

The event brought together students, graduates, industry leaders, practitioners, and government representatives to explore how to better align education with industry needs and promote youth entrepreneurship in construction.

Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg, emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between learning and labour: “We must link what's taught in classrooms to what the sector demands, while creating clear pathways to jobs and business ownership."

He called on government, educational institutions, and the private sector to invest in youth development through skills training, mentorship, internships, and procurement opportunities.

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Jack Sekwaila, added his voice in support of practical youth empowerment.

Participants cheered as Nokuthula Mkhwanazi stressed the need to uplift young-owned and women-led construction firms.
