The City of Johannesburg has rolled out a high-impact, city-wide service delivery campaign aimed at restoring cleanliness and order, starting in the inner city (CBD) and recently moving into Region B.
This ongoing effort forms part of a broader commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier Johannesburg for all who live, work, and visit.
As part of this campaign, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Dada Morero, will officially launch the Mayoral Clean-Up Rehabilitation Campaign on 5 June 2025 in Region D, coinciding with World Environment Day. This flagship initiative aims to rehabilitate 100 illegal dumping hotspots across the City.
Led by the Mayor's office, the campaign brings together multiple City departments and entities, including Pikitup, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Johannesburg Property Company, Economic Development, Development Planning, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, and Citizen Relationship and Urban Management. These stakeholders will work together to clean, secure, and reclaim areas that have been severely impacted by illegal dumping and environmental neglect.
The campaign will focus on seven priority regions, with sites selected in consultation with Pikitup, Regional Directors, and local communities. Clean-up and rehabilitation work will be done in phases—four sites at a time—until all 100 identified areas have been addressed. The scope of rehabilitation will vary, with some sites receiving basic clean-ups and signage, while others will be transformed into parks, community gardens, or safe public spaces such as playgrounds.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the City is introducing enhanced waste management planning, improved law enforcement, increased community education, and strengthened partnerships with local businesses. Schools will also be included in the programme through environmental awareness and clean-up activities, helping to foster a culture of environmental responsibility from a young age.
This campaign forms part of the City's broader mission to deliver quality municipal services, fight urban decay, and position Johannesburg as a caring and responsive City that values clean and safe living conditions for all residents.
