The Linden Swimming Pool isn't just a place to beat the summer heat, it's a neighbourhood landmark where families, swimmers and friends come together to train, relax and connect.
Linden's recent recognition as one of the “coolest" neighbourhoods worldwide reinforces its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The pool, located on the corner of 4th Avenue and 11th Street forms part of what makes the suburb so special.
For City employees Pauline Khumalo, Supervisor, and Neil Stewart, Acting Superintendent and Lifeguard, who both have been in the City for over 28 years combined, working for municipality is more than just a job, it's about keeping the community safe and interacting with visitors.
Khumalo, who has been keeping swimmers safe for over a decade at the pool, says being part of the Linden community is rewarding. “It's a good feeling," she says with a smile. “Linden is beautiful and safe, and we meet so many different people here."
Khumalo's pride shows in the care she takes each day to ensure swimmers' safety and comfort. “Looking after people's lives and interacting with them is what I love most about my job."
Stewart, a City employee of 27 years and 18 of them spent at the Linden Pool, agrees that it's the people who make the job meaningful. “You don't choose this job, the job chooses you."
“Every day is different here," he adds. From busy galas to quiet mornings, he's seen the suburb evolve with coffee shops, leafy streets, and the nearby botanical gardens drawing more residents and visitors.
While the Covid-19 pandemic once thinned out the familiar crowd, the faces returned each summer are a welcome reminder of Linden's resilience. “We still think about what happened to some of our regulars. But seeing people back here enjoying themselves again, that's what makes it all worthwhile."
As you step into the facility you're greeted by friendly cashiers. The main attraction on the premises is the in-house heated pool. The Linden Swimming Pool also boast a baby swimming pool outside surrounded by a perfect green lawn. The facility has male and female restrooms equipped with shower and changing facilities. The pool dates back to 1964 when the premises were officially declared open by the mayor at the time Cllr Pieter Roos.
