The Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC) — one of the City of Johannesburg's most vital yet lesser-known entities — has officially rebranded as the Metropolitan Tech Company, or simply MetroTech.
This transformation marks a bold new chapter defined by innovation, digital inclusion, and a renewed commitment to connecting the people of Johannesburg through technology.
Originally established to support trade and informal markets, MTC has evolved alongside the City's growing digital needs. Over the years, it has become the driving force behind Johannesburg's broadband network — linking schools, clinics, libraries, and public spaces to reliable internet access. Yet, despite its impact, much of this work happened quietly behind the scenes. That is now changing.
The decision to rebrand from Metropolitan Trading Company to Metropolitan Tech Company was approved by the MTC Board, with the support of the City of Johannesburg Mayoral Committee. The rebrand signals a modern, future-focused organisation aligned with the City's Smart City vision — one that uses technology as a tool for inclusion, growth, and improved service delivery.
Chief Executive Officer Thedi Moropa described the change as a defining milestone. “MetroTech tells our story of evolution. We represent innovation, connection, and service to the people of Johannesburg. We are no longer just managing infrastructure — we are the engine driving the City's digital transformation."
MetroTech's refreshed visual identity reflects this shift. The new logo, inspired by Johannesburg's skyline, replaces the old trade-centred design with a bold, modern emblem. Gold, blue, and red rays radiate from the centre, symbolising energy, progress, and the spread of connectivity across the city.
As Johannesburg advances its Smart City agenda, MetroTech will continue bridging the digital divide — empowering communities, supporting small businesses, and enabling access to opportunities. From free Wi-Fi at transport hubs to innovation in schools and clinics, MetroTech is shaping how residents live, learn, and connect.
This rebrand is more than a new name — it's a promise to build a smarter, faster, and more connected Johannesburg, one digital link at a time.
