​Lutando Maboza, recently appointed Executive Director of Johannesburg's Transport Department, is determined to transform the City's mobility landscape through innovation, collaboration, and a clear commitment to service delivery.

Maboza is married with three children. He earned a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering and a Master's in Built Environment.

Starting as a technician in 2004, Maboza focused on road design before joining the Eastern Cape government in 2010, and by 2015, he was the Senior Director of Design and Implementation at the Nelson Mandela Metro. He also served as Acting Executive Director for Human Settlements and as a Bus Rapid Transit Project Manager.

Since taking on his new role, Maboza has initiated monthly meetings to encourage employees to share concerns and suggestions, driven by his motto, “Just Do It!" He's determined to implement positive changes within his department.

A key challenge he's tackling is the outdated Automated Fare Collection System (AFC), which makes tracking BRT rider numbers difficult. Maboza is excited to announce a new, state-of-the-art AFC system, compliant with Account-Based Ticketing, expected to be operational this month. It is expected to streamline fare management and allow commuters to plan journeys via smartphones.

“The Transport Department is crucial for enhancing Johannesburg's transportation network, ensuring safe and efficient travel," Maboza states. Its responsibilities include long-term transport planning, managing public transport like Rea Vaya BRT, and maintaining road infrastructure to ease congestion. The department also promotes non-motorised transport, road safety, and eco-friendly initiatives.

With Maboza at the helm, the Transport Department is poised to better serve Johannesburg residents and create a brighter future for the City.
