Weltevreden Park Library recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The facility has evolved significantly from its humble beginnings as a small room in the local clinic to becoming a cornerstone of the community's legacy of learning and knowledge.

Despite the rise of technology and its impact, the library remains a vital institution within the community. Established in the early 1980s, the library initially operated from a modest space at the Weltevreden Park Clinic before officially opening on 13 March 1985.

Four decades on, the library continues to serve as a hub for the community, offering books, e-books, magazines, puzzles, free Wi-Fi, and programmes tailored to all age groups.

Gwyneth Perry, Senior Librarian at Weltevreden Park Library, and her team have cultivated a warm and welcoming environment for visitors. The library provides a quiet space for students, remote workers, and many others who rely on its resources.

“The library is as quiet as it should be, making it a pleasure to study here and focus," said Doctor Mokoatle, a regular user.

Perry expressed her passion for the library, stating: “I want to make it a shining light in the City. Having worked here for over 20 years, I feel blessed to have such a dedicated team and a supportive community that makes this a joyful workplace."

Esther Masungwini, a librarian at Weltevreden Park Library, added: “The library feels like a home away from home. It's clean, welcoming, and the staff are friendly and professional. There's a true spirit of Ubuntu here – there's never a dull moment!"

Fran Jansen van Vuuren, a long-standing member of the library, shared: “In 2001, one of the reasons we bought our home was its proximity to the library, just 300 metres away. The staff have always been cheerful and helpful, and the library is exceptionally well-run and organised. The monthly talks are fascinating and provide a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people in the area."

The library hosts a variety of programmes, including an adult reading circle on the first Tuesday morning of every month and a monthly social event for adults. For children, story time sessions are held every Friday at 3pm, alongside exciting holiday programmes during school breaks.

“We are proud to be part of this journey and are committed to ensuring Weltevreden Park Library continues to shine for the next 40 years," said Perry.
