After months of preparation, the Johannesburg Tourism Company is excited to launch its latest Tourism Ambassador Programme, deploying 227 enthusiastic young people to sites and attractions across the City of Johannesburg.

Following a rigorous process of screening, training, and upskilling, Joburg Tourism began placing the information ambassadors at various locations in mid-November. The programme aims to make Johannesburg a safer and more navigable destination for visitors, while bolstering tourism awareness and information services in the city.

“This is a comprehensive, multi-layered initiative that we are confident will achieve its objectives," says Thandubuhle Mgudlwa, CEO of Joburg Tourism.

In collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders, the programme is designed to enhance safety awareness at tourism hotspots, reduce crime incidents targeting visitors, and equip unemployed youth with practical skills and work experience. Utilising the public employment programme as a vehicle, the initiative aims to improve youth employability.

“We're proud to report that three participants from last year's intake have secured full-time positions in the tourism sector," adds Mgudlwa.

The training, conducted in partnership with the City's Department of Public Safety, included 10 modules covering first aid, basic fire prevention, service excellence, and tourism information dissemination.

“Despite the challenges we faced in previous iterations of the programme, we have laid a solid foundation. By intensifying monitoring, recruiting qualified candidates, and refining logistical planning, we can build on these lessons to ensure even greater success in the current and future programmes," Mgudlwa concludes.
