Seventy young people are one step closer to achieving economic independence after graduating from entrepreneurship and management programmes supported by the City of Johannesburg's Social Development Department, in partnership with the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Services SETA) and Phosaane Training Institute.

The graduation ceremony in Sandton celebrated the achievements of young people who completed nationally recognised qualifications aimed at equipping them with the skills needed to start businesses and contribute to the local economy.

Speaking during the ceremony, City of Johannesburg Director of Social Development Ngwako Lebea described the graduation as a celebration of resilience, growth and opportunity.

“This graduation represents what can be achieved when government and its partners invest in people. Through collaborations such as this, we are empowering young people to become active contributors to society and the economy," said Lebea.

The City also acknowledged Services SETA for funding the programme, noting that partnerships between government, training institutions and industry remain essential in addressing unemployment and sustainable development.

Participants received training in entrepreneurship, business management, leadership and enterprise growth, equipping them with practical knowledge to either enter the workplace or establish their own businesses.

Among those celebrated was Maphindi Mogajane, whose journey inspired many in attendance. A single mother of two, she completed the generic management qualification while balancing family responsibilities. “I want to become a manager or manage my own business. My dream is to grow my baking business.

“The qualification was not easy. It required focus and dedication. Being a single mother made it even more challenging, but I persevered. Completing the programme after one year is something I am very proud of," said Mogajane.

As youth unemployment remains one of South Africa's biggest socio-economic challenges, initiatives like these continue to build skills, create opportunities and support a more inclusive, resilient Johannesburg economy.
