At just 10 years old, Alexandra youngster Tshiamo Makamedi is already making his mark as an emerging golf star. In March 2026, Tshiamo enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime moment when he hit the ceremonial opening tee shot at the Jo​burg Open Golf tournament. Standing on one of the country's biggest golfing stages, with his family watching proudly from the front row, was a moment he will never forget.

Off the course, Tshiamo enjoys playing soccer, collecting luxury toy cars and listening to music. Before every tournament, he listens to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Smooth Criminal to help him focus. Once he steps onto the course, however, golf has his full attention.

Tshiamo started playing competitively at the age of seven after accompanying his father, Danny, to the golf course. “My dad inspired me to play," he says.

Danny, who also serves as his caddy, has played a pivotal role in his son's development, teaching him everything from reading greens to lining up putts. Their shared passion for golf has strengthened their father-son bond.

For Tshiamo, golf is about more than trophies. “Golf teaches me focus and discipline. That's what I like," he says. He also enjoys the satisfaction of seeing hard work pay off.

His dedication is already producing impressive results. His achievements include second place at the Stars of Africa Tournament in Namibia (2025), second place at the Delta Championship in Botswana (2024), the Spirit of Golf Award at SA Kids, third place at the World Junior Qualifier, and a top-10 finish at the Junior Africa Championships in 2025.

His next target is the San Lameer Tournament, where he hopes to claim victory or secure another top-10 finish. Despite balancing school, family life and golf, Tshiamo says his approach is simple: “I am 100% present in everything I do."

He dreams of one day competing on the PGA Tour or the Sunshine Tour and looks up to professional golfers Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau.

While Tshiamo's talent is undeniable, Danny says the greatest challenge is funding the sport. Tournament travel, accommodation, coaching and equipment are all paid for by the family.

“We would love to see more support from sponsors and development programmes," says Danny. “Without assistance, many talented young golfers fall out of the system. With the right support, more young players can realise their potential."

For Tshiamo, the focus remains simple: the next tournament, the next round and the next opportunity to chase his dream.
