The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) continues to gain recognition for transformative infrastructure delivery, with the Central Fire Station Project shortlisted for the Infrastructure Project of the Year award at the Big 5 South Africa Impact Awards 2026.
The Big 5 South Africa Impact Awards, set to take place on 10 June 2026 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, celebrate excellence, innovation, and impact across the country's construction and infrastructure sector.
The awards recognise standout projects, organisations, and professionals shaping the future of the built environment, with winners selected by an independent panel of respected industry experts.
Delivered by the JDA on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, the Central Fire Station project represents a major milestone in strengthening emergency response infrastructure in the Johannesburg inner city. The state-of-the-art facility replaces a 90-year-old structure that had become a public safety risk and restores critical emergency service coverage to high-risk areas such as the Johannesburg CBD and Hillbrow.

It was officially opened in October 2025 and forms part of the City's broader commitment to improving service delivery, urban resilience, and public safety. Beyond infrastructure delivery, the R71 million development also created meaningful socio-economic impact by achieving a 30% local spend target and supporting nine local small businesses through employment and mentorship opportunities during construction.
MMC for Development Planning Eunice Mgcina, welcomed the recognition, describing the nomination as a reflection of the agency's commitment to delivering infrastructure that transforms communities and improves the quality of life for residents.
“The Central Fire Station is more than a building — it is an investment in safety, resilience, and responsive public services for the people of Johannesburg. Being shortlisted for this award affirms the importance of infrastructure that delivers both social and economic impact," said Mgcina.
The nomination highlights the growing recognition of infrastructure projects that not only demonstrate engineering and construction excellence but also contribute meaningfully to sustainable urban development and inclusive economic growth.
