​On 16 April 2026, residents of Region B packed the Danie van Zyl Hall to attend the City of Johannesburg's Integrated Development Planning (IDP) session in Newlands. The event was attended by the Speaker of Council, Cllr Magaret Arnold, Acting Mayor and MMC for Development Planning Cllr Eunice Mgcina and MMC for Transport Cllr Kenny Kunene.

Residents engaged with various City departments and entities, including Joburg Tourism, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), City Power, the Ombudsman and the Health Department. The session provided valuable information on services and allowed residents to log service delivery queries.

Cllr Mgcina presented the draft 2026/27 IDP, outlining projects implemented in Region B over the past year, as well as proposed initiatives such as infrastructure maintenance and upgrades by City Power and Joburg Water.

The proposed draft rates and tariffs were also presented, with a 3.6% increase for both residential and business properties. Residents were reminded that indigent households and pensioners may qualify for rebates through the City's Expanded Social Package.

Key concerns raised included illegal informal settlements, perceived underinvestment in more affluent areas, a lack of speed humps near schools, and poor maintenance of municipal-owned flats.

“I am not completely satisfied with the IDP. There is still much work to be done, but I understand that funding is limited," said Zodwa Zungu from Ward 68.

Johan Smit from Ward 102 said authorities need to do more. “The City has to do more to save the Ranburg CBD and bring it to its former glory."

Responding to concerns, Cllr Kunene said the City will prioritise speed humps near schools and encouraged residents to attend community meetings to help identify and fast-track service delivery priorities.

“I urge residents to attend community meetings when the City holds them. At these meetings, we are able to identify priority areas and to expedite fixing problems," said Cllr Kunene.
