The City of Johannesburg's Community Development Department, through its Library and Information Services directorate, hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Programme at Noordgesig Library on 22 October 2026 to promote early detection, encourage regular medical check-ups and support people affected by breast cancer.

Held under the theme “Every Story Is Unique, Every Journey Matters", the programme brought together health professionals, cancer survivors and community members to raise awareness about the importance of prioritising health and showing compassion towards those affected by the disease.

Sister Ntombi Mokoena from Noordgesig Clinic spoke about the importance of regular medical examinations for both women and men. She encouraged residents to take responsibility for their health, understand cancer risks and seek medical attention when they notice changes.

The programme also featured cancer survivors Dessiree Erens and Danielle Wilskut, who shared their personal journeys.

“When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was scared but they reassured me that it can be beaten, and here I am," said Erens.

Wilskut shared how her faith in God helped her through her darkest moments, reminding attendees that kindness and compassion can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people facing cancer.

“What also gave me strength to go on was the love, patience and understanding from my family and friends. Everyone helped me walk this journey better and less fearful," said Wilskut.

The event was attended by members of a local women's group and two male residents, reinforcing the message that cancer awareness and support are a shared responsibility.

Through initiatives like this, the City of Johannesburg continues to use its libraries as spaces for community education, awareness and support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
