​Drieziek Library in Region G celebrated Heritage Month on 22 September 2026 with a vibrant cultural programme for Early Childhood Development (ECD) learners from Ebernezer Day Care. The celebration, hosted by the City of Johannesburg's Community Development Department through the Library and Information Services Directorate, gave the young learners an opportunity to explore their heritage, express gratitude and celebrate the diverse cultures and identities that make up South Africa.

The programme used music and cultural activities to introduce the children to the richness of South African heritage. Learners sang cultural songs and danced, creating a joyful atmosphere while encouraging them to connect with and appreciate their cultural roots.

Storytelling was also a key feature. The children listened to Give Thank You a Try by James Patterson and the isiZulu book UKumamatheka kukaPeggy, written by Kaanitah Cassim and Monde Mraji. The stories explored themes of gratitude, kindness and embracing differences.

A highlight was the opportunity for learners to share their clan names, or izithakazelo. Other languages represented among the learners were also acknowledged, highlighting the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity. The children were encouraged to be proud of their cultures and individuality, while respecting and appreciating the identities of others.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad emphasised the important role libraries play in developing young minds.

“The future of this City is reliant on the empowerment of its young minds. We applaud the library for continuing the City's mandate of ensuring that every child is capacitated with the skills required to play a meaningful role in the future of this City and the country," said Cllr Amad.
