Eldorado Park Library empowers adults with computer skills for employment

The atmosphere at Eldorado Park Ext. 5 Library was filled with curiosity, determination and hope as residents gathered for a Digital Transformation and Computer Literacy Programme aimed at equipping them with essential digital skills for today's world.

Driven by the growing unemployment rate in South Africa, the initiative by City of Johannesburg's Library and Information Services under the Community Development's Department sought to empower community members with practical knowledge on computer usage, CV writing and online job applications. Participants were guided through the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, while also learning how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can assist in creating professional CVs tailored to job requirements.

The training also focused on online safety, teaching participants how to identify scams, suspicious emails and computer viruses — a critical skill in an increasingly digital society.

One participant, Nabila Hoosein, shared some of the challenges she previously faced. “Usually putting in my qualifications properly as well as struggling to use certain keys in order to make my CV stand out," she explained.

Despite the challenges, the training room was alive with constructive discussions, laughter and the exchange of ideas. During a tea break, participants eagerly shared new ways of prompting AI to improve their CVs and job applications, highlighting their excitement towards embracing technology.

The programme was open to all adult residents of Johannesburg willing to learn basic computer skills. Participants were provided with laptops and guided by knowledgeable facilitators who ensured that everyone received support throughout the session.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad expressed support for the initiative, saying: “Digital skills are no longer a luxury but a necessity. Programmes such as this help bridge the gap between unemployment and opportunity by empowering communities with knowledge that can improve their lives and restore dignity."

Facilitators confirmed that due to the increasing number of participants, the programme will soon expand to include more advanced digital skills training.
