The City of Joburg, Region C, together with Joburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), recently visited Fleurhof Primary School in Roodepoort to mark Arbor Day. It was marked by planting trees and educating young learners about the important role trees play in our everyday lives and the environment. The visit was led by Regional Director Mlamleli Belot, who encouraged learners to take responsibility for caring for the trees planted on the day.
He emphasised the importance of nurturing and protecting trees to ensure that they continue to benefit future generations.
“As the City of Joburg, we are very happy to be here, and we are fully committed to ensuring that we green our townships by providing and planting as many trees as possible," said Belot.
Puleng Ditabe from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) appealed to learners to commit to protecting trees by refraining from breaking branches or swinging from them, now that they understand the key role trees play in the environment.
She also reminded learners that trees help combat climate change and encouraged them to continue planting and caring for trees so that communities can enjoy their many benefits.
A total of 50 trees were planted across the school premises, contributing to a greener and more pleasant learning environment for the Fleurhof Primary School community.
As part of the Arbor Day celebration, learners also participated in an artwork competition, with several learners receiving prizes for their outstanding and creative work.
The learners actively participated in planting the trees, which were donated by JCPZ employees in Region C. The activity provided an opportunity for learners to put into practice the lessons they had received about environmental conservation and the importance of protecting green spaces.
The City of Joburg remains committed to creating more sustainable communities by promoting tree planting, environmental education, and conservation initiatives across the region. Through partnerships with schools, communities, and its entities such as JCPZ, the City continues to encourage residents, particularly young people, to become environmental stewards and play an active role in protecting the environment for generations to come.
