The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, continues to make steady progress on the Pimville Zone 9 Road Upgrade Project, with construction activities currently focused on preparing roads for surfacing and improving stormwater infrastructure.
Recent site activities include the grading and shaping of road layers, watering and compaction of the subbase, and the installation of kerbs and stormwater drainage infrastructure. These critical construction processes are laying the foundation for durable surfaced roads that will improve accessibility, mobility and safety for residents.
The project forms part of the City's ongoing commitment to upgrading gravel roads in historically underserved communities, ensuring that neighbourhoods benefit from reliable transport infrastructure that supports both pedestrians and motorists.
Once completed, the upgraded roads will provide:
- Improved all-weather access for residents and emergency services;
- Enhanced road safety through formalised road infrastructure and stormwater management;
- Reduced dust and improved environmental conditions; and
- Better connectivity within Pimville Zone 9 and surrounding communities.
The project is guided by the Complete Streets Design Guideline, which recognises that streets are more than transport corridors — they are public spaces that should safely accommodate all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transport commuters, motorists, children, older persons and people living with disabilities.
By integrating road upgrades with pedestrian infrastructure, stormwater management and improved accessibility, the project aims to create streets that are functional, safe and welcoming for everyone.
The Pimville Zone 9 project will supplement substantial gravel road upgrades and stormwater implementation under the City's Complete Streets approach that the JDA has rolled out in Region D.
This includes the Elias Motsoaledi gravel road upgrade, which involved upgrading 4.5km of gravel roads to surfaced standards, including comprehensive stormwater drainage systems.
