The Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) is inviting manufacturers and suppliers of innovative building technologies to tender for a place on its panel, opening new opportunities to accelerate housing delivery, upgrade informal settlements and improve affordable accommodation across Johannesburg. The tender advertisement goes out today, 23 October 2026, and will be available on JOSHCO's website: www.joshco.co.za/about-joshco/tenders.

The initiative seeks to establish a panel of qualifying suppliers specialising in Temporary Residential Units (TRUs), modular containers, non-sewered sanitation systems, and energy- and water-saving technologies. These solutions could help address housing needs while reducing pressure on conventional municipal infrastructure and improving resource efficiency.

JOSHCO, a City of Johannesburg entity and accredited social housing institution, is exploring innovative technologies to improve existing social housing and student accommodation developments. The technologies could help reduce operational costs, improve living conditions and support more sustainable housing delivery.

The initiative follows the Innovative Building Technology Summit convened by the Minister of Human Settlements, Thembisile Simelane, in February 2026. The summit showcased alternative building methods and resource-efficient solutions to accelerate the development of sustainable human settlements.

JOSHCO also identified innovative technologies as potential interventions to improve living conditions in informal settlements. These include temporary accommodation, alternative sanitation systems and energy- and water-efficient infrastructure.

Funding opportunities include the dedicated 2% allocation of the Human Settlements Development Grant for Innovative Building Technologies, as well as the Informal Settlements Upgrading Partnership Grant, subject to applicable funding conditions and approvals.

“I have approved the advertisement of a panel of IBT manufacturers and suppliers that specialise in various categories of innovations, such as Temporary Residential Units, modular containers, non-sewered systems, and energy- and water-saving systems.

“The intention is to enable all qualifying companies to partner with JOSHCO in accelerating housing opportunities within the City of Johannesburg," says Katlego Ditshego, JOSHCO's acting Chief Executive Officer.

Looking ahead, JOSHCO has identified approximately 257 existing properties for potential redevelopment into social housing and student accommodation as part of efforts to revitalise the inner city. Through innovative technologies and partnerships with the private sector, JOSHCO aims to unlock underutilised properties, expand affordable accommodation and improve the sustainability of housing developments.

Interested suppliers and technology providers can access the tender advertisement from today, 23 October 2026, on JOSHCO's tenders page.
