The much-anticipated Jazz in the Lights Music Festival is set to return to the Johannesburg Zoo on Human Rights Day, 21 March 2026, promising a vibrant celebration where music, memory and magic meet under open skies.
Now in its fourth edition, the festival has grown into a flagship event on the City's Arts Alive Programme calendar, blending world-class jazz with culture, lifestyle and tourism experiences. It continues to position Johannesburg as a dynamic hub for both business and leisure, while celebrating the city's rich musical heritage.
A reimagined evolution of the beloved “Jazz on the Lake", the festival has been carefully curated to offer a balanced and inclusive line-up. Audiences can look forward to a mix of emerging talent, established performers and legendary artists—many of whom are rarely seen on mainstream festival stages. The programme also reflects a strong commitment to inclusivity, with gender-balanced representation, artists living with disabilities, and a diverse spread of talent from across the country.
“As Joburg City Theatres, we understand that strong brands are built through meaningful collaboration," says Bongani Maseko, Acting General Manager: Marketing and Communication. “Jazz in the Lights is a powerful example of how partnerships can create a platform that is inclusive, relevant and impactful."
For attendees, the festival offers more than just music—it's a full family experience. While jazz lovers enjoy soulful melodies and timeless classics, families can explore the zoo's unique attractions, creating a space where generations connect and shared memories are made.
This year also marks a significant milestone, with Joburg Tourism joining the festival as a strategic partner for the first time. The collaboration strengthens the link between arts and tourism, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and local development.
“Jazz in the Lights is more than a festival; it's a celebration of our city's cultural heartbeat and a powerful driver of economic growth," says Belu Mabandla, Executive Head for Destination Marketing and Events at Joburg Tourism. “By supporting this event, we are creating a platform where local artists and small businesses can thrive."
The festival's economic impact is already evident. The 2024 edition supported 22 small businesses, created 208 jobs, contracted 177 professional artists, and included three school choirs through the Schools Development Programme—helping to nurture the next generation of talent.
Beyond economic benefits, sustainability remains a key priority. The festival is carefully designed to respect the zoo environment, with strict noise level controls in place. On-site engineers monitor sound levels, while trained zoo staff oversee both animal welfare and crowd behaviour to ensure a safe and responsible experience for all.
For those seeking a premium experience, VIP hospitality packages offer an elevated way to enjoy the day, with exclusive seating, curated dining, and access to a private bar, along with secure parking and shuttle services.
The festival kicks off at 10:00, with ticket options designed to remain accessible: VIP tickets are priced at R1500, general access at R350, pensioners at R200, and children under 12 at R100.
As Johannesburg continues to build its reputation as a leading destination for arts and entertainment, this festival stands out as a true reflection of the city's vibrant spirit.
