The Market Theatre celebrates its 50th anniversary this June, five decades since a repurposed fruit and vegetable market in Newtown became one of the world's most recognised venues for South African performing arts.
Founded in 1976, the theatre earned global distinction as the “Theatre of the Struggle", a non-racial space that defied apartheid-era segregation by staging productions that amplified marginalised voices and gathered audiences of all backgrounds when the law forbade it.
“By allowing audiences of all backgrounds to gather when laws strictly prohibited such interaction, the theatre became a symbol of social resistance and creative freedom," says a Market Theatre publicist.

A three-day birthday celebration from 19 to 21 June will honour the individuals who built this legacy, featuring a Golden Season showcase of revived protest-era classics alongside new works by contemporary playwrights.
The anniversary extends into the broader Newtown precinct with a street festival offering live music, public art tours, and an archival exhibition of original scripts, costumes, and photographs spanning 1976 to the present.
“This celebration will showcase a history of fearless storytelling while encouraging new reflections on the future of South African theatre," adds the publicist.
For visitors, the Market Theatre remains a key destination for understanding the history of Johannesburg. It offers an immersive look at the city's past while contributing to the modern identity of the inner city as a hub for arts and dialogue. Its location in the historic Newtown cultural precinct continues to serve as a significant draw for both local residents and international tourists.
