The Chief Executive Officer of Joburg Market, Sello Makhubela, is participating in an international study visit in the Netherlands and Belgium from 14 to 20 March 2026. Hosted by the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, the programme focuses on the Global Gateway initiative and sustainable agri-logistics partnerships.
The visit brings together policymakers and private sector representatives from Angola, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa, alongside European partners, to explore opportunities for collaboration along strategic trade corridors connecting Africa and Europe. It forms part of a broader effort to strengthen international partnerships that support sustainable trade, agricultural development, and efficient logistics systems across the continent.
On the first day of engagements, the delegation was warmly welcomed by the Ambassador for Business and Development, Marchel Gerrmann. This was followed by presentations from development and trade specialists outlining the Dutch government's policy approach to the European Union's Global Gateway Strategy.
Participants were introduced to several key regional development initiatives, including:
- The Northern Corridor in East Africa
- The Lobito Corridor, linking Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo
- The Combitracks initiative, which integrates development cooperation, trade, and investment to support sustainable economic growth.
The delegation also engaged with experts from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, gaining insight into how the Netherlands partners with governments and the private sector to advance sustainable trade, logistics innovation, and private sector development.
For Joburg Market, the visit presents a strategic opportunity to strengthen global partnerships and attract investment in support of its Smart Market Strategy. This strategy is aimed at modernising market infrastructure, improving logistics systems, and enhancing market access for farmers.
Makhubela said the engagement marks an important step in strengthening the organisation's position in international agricultural trade. “This mission represents a significant step in positioning Joburg Market within global agricultural value chains.
“Through strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange with international stakeholders, we are working to unlock investment opportunities that will support the Smart Market Strategy, strengthen agri-logistics systems, and expand market access for African producers," he said.
Joburg Market remains committed to expanding its international partnerships and reinforcing its role as Africa's leading fresh produce market, while contributing to food security, agricultural development, and economic growth across the continent.
