The City of Johannesburg marked Human Rights Day through sport, unity and community development as the Speaker of Council, Cllr Margaret Arnolds, joined Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Second Lady Humile Mashatile and Region E Regional Director Thabo Makgafela, at the annual Alex 10km race.

Hosted in Alexandra, the event brought together residents, athletes, community organisations and government leaders in a powerful display of social cohesion and active citizenship. The race continues to grow into a flagship community event, using sport as a platform to promote inclusion, healthy living and shared community pride.

Under the theme Explore Alex on Foot", the initiative encourages both residents and visitors to experience Alexandra beyond its challenges, highlighting its rich cultural heritage, vibrant street life and resilient community spirit. The race route itself offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with the township, supporting local vendors and showcasing the area as a destination for inclusive urban tourism.

The presence of national and local leadership at the event underscored the importance of partnerships in driving community-based development. It also reaffirmed the City's commitment to programmes that not only commemorate national days but translate their values into tangible impact at grassroots level.

Speaking at the event, Speaker Arnolds reflected on the significance of Human Rights Day and its relevance in contemporary society: “Human Rights Day calls on all of us to reflect on the journey we have travelled as a nation, and the work that still lies ahead in building a society rooted in dignity, equality and opportunity for all. Events like the Alex 10K Race demonstrate how we can bring these values to life in our communities."

She further highlighted the broader developmental impact of the initiative: “This race is more than a sporting event, it is a catalyst for social and economic renewal. It promotes healthy lifestyles, supports local businesses and restores a sense of pride in Alexandra. Through initiatives like this, we are investing in people, in place-making, and in the future of our communities".
