The City of Johannesburg's Department of Economic Development has launched JIX Launchpad, a free business development programme designed to help young entrepreneurs turn informal income-generating activities into sustainable businesses.

The four-week programme targets Joburg residents aged 18 to 35 who are already earning an income through gig work or self-employment, including freelancers, content creators, designers, tailors, food vendors, drivers, tradespeople and other service providers.

Delivered by the Wits Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct as part of the Johannesburg Innovation Exchange (JIX), the programme will equip participants with practical business skills in pricing, financial management, client acquisition, branding, marketing and business growth.

Participants will also receive one-on-one mentoring, attend weekly workshops at the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct in Braamfontein, take part in virtual business clinics and join a peer support network.

The programme culminates in a Demo Day, where entrepreneurs will pitch their businesses to mentors, partners and potential funders. Top participants will be connected to funding opportunities and business support organisations, including the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).

Priority will be given to women-owned and women-led businesses, township enterprises and persons with disabilities.

Applications opened on 3 July and close on 15 July 2026. The programme will run from 20 July to 14 August 2026 and is fully funded by the City of Johannesburg, making participation free for successful applicants.

Young entrepreneurs can apply online by completing the application form and outlining their business, goals and growth ambitions.
