As Johannesburg welcomes the first rains of spring, the City calls on residents, businesses, schools and community organisations to help keep communities safe, clean and prepared by preventing blockages and reporting weather-related incidents. While the rains bring much-needed relief and greener surroundings, they can wash litter, sand, rubble and garden waste into stormwater drains, rivers and sewer systems. This can cause blocked drains, sewer overflows, localised flooding, road damage and water pollution.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, urges residents to take precautions.
“As the spring rains return, I ask every resident to look after the places we call home. Sweeping debris away from drains, reporting blockages, leaks and fallen trees, joining neighbourhood clean-ups and helping people in distress are small actions that make a big difference in keeping our city clean and safe."
Residents are encouraged to:
- Clear leaves and debris from properties and surrounds, particularly after rainfall.
- Not to dump rubbish into stormwater drains, streams or open spaces.
- Keep sanitary products, wipes, toys and other solid materials out of toilets and domestic drains. Grease and fat should not be poured down kitchen sinks, as they can build up, restrict sewage flow and cause blockages.
- Report blocked drains, sewer spillages, flooded roads and damaged infrastructure.
- Keep children away from flooded areas, rivers, dams and open stormwater channels.
- Support community clean-up initiatives to help prevent flooding.
A cleaner, safer Johannesburg depends on everyone. Every drain kept clear, piece of litter removed and incident reported helps protect lives, property and the environment.
“Let's keep Johannesburg flowing in the right direction this rainy season to protect lives and property," says Mayor Morero.
