The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is pleased to announce the nomination of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) as a potential SATIS 2026 showcase project. The recognition underscores the significance of the Gallery's continuing restoration, preservation, and renewal. JAG serves as a key platform for artistic expression, education and public engagement.

The nomination provided an opportunity to showcase progress in protecting this historic landmark and expanding its contribution to the city's cultural, social and economic life.

Showcasing JAG at SATIS 2026 demonstrated how strategic public-sector investment, heritage conservation and urban regeneration can create inclusive, sustainable public spaces. The JAG restoration programme, led by the JDA and its partners, seeks to protect the Gallery's architectural heritage while enhancing its accessibility, functionality and visitor experience for future generations.

JDA Chief Executive Officer Themba Mathibe welcomed the recognition. “The nomination of the Johannesburg Art Gallery as a potential SATIS 2026 showcase project is a proud moment for the Johannesburg Development Agency and the City of Johannesburg.”

Restoring and revitalising JAG goes beyond preserving a historic building. It demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding the city's cultural heritage, creating inclusive public spaces and ensuring that arts and culture remain accessible to all residents,” he said

The JDA remains committed to delivering infrastructure and development initiatives that build social cohesion, drive economic growth and enhance public spaces throughout Johannesburg. This nomination reflects the agency's sustained investment in projects that create long-term value for residents while protecting the city's distinctive heritage.

City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero said the nomination reinforces the City's commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage.

“The Johannesburg Art Gallery is among our city's most significant cultural assets and embodies its rich artistic and historical legacy. Its nomination as a potential SATIS 2026 project reflects the City's ongoing commitment to infrastructure that strengthens communities, conserves heritage and promotes economic and social development,” he said.
