This Youth Month, the City of Johannesburg continues to celebrate young professionals who are making meaningful contributions across the City. Among them is Khathutshelo Mulaudzi, a seasoned communicator whose experience in journalism and broadcasting now helps shape the voice of the City of Johannesburg as Mayoral Spokesperson.
As Director of Communication and Mayoral Spokesperson Mulaudzi is responsible for managing communication between the Executive Mayor's Office and the public. Whether at the State of the City Address, Budget Speech, Council Meetings, or service delivery initiatives, she's there to make sure the City's voice will echo.
“My core responsibilities include coordinating media relations, crafting messaging that reflects the vision and priorities of the City, and ensuring residents are informed about matters that affect their daily lives. I am the bridge between leadership and the people," she explains.
She says her days begin with a media scan to access public sentiment and monitor emerging issues. “My days involve media briefings, stakeholder communications, internal strategy sessions, and often rapid response to breaking developments in the City. I am always switched on because public perception does not follow office hours. It is a high-pressure environment, and I thrive in it."
Mulaudzi hails from, Mandala, a village in Limpopo where she was raised by her single mother and late grandmother, who was rooted in faith and prayer. She says her humble upbringing prepared her for the world. “Whenever I face pressure or uncertainty I return to the values instilled in me in that village; humility, resilience, and the understanding that everything you are, you owe to the people who believed in you before you believed in yourself."
One of her biggest challenges has been earning credibility in rooms where experience is often measured by age. “I have overcome this by letting my work speak loudly. I keep learning, and I refuse to allow self-doubt to win."
Her communications expertise was built through her years in journalism, both print and broadcasting. She's worked for publications like Business Day and Limpopo's Zoutnet. She also worked as Bulletin Editor at SABC and Producer for SABC News, Senior Producer at Phalaphala FM and produced award-winning current affair programmes like Judge for Yourself with Dennis Davis, The Justice Factor with Justice Malala and Face the Nation with Clement Manyathela.
Mulaudzi holds a National Diploma and BTech in Journalism from Tshwane University of Technology and she's currently pursuing her postgraduate qualification in Public Management at the University of Pretoria to deepen her understanding of governance and public service leadership.
Her advice to young people who would like to pursue a career in public governance is to get curious about how the world works. “Never stop asking questions. Read widely, news, policy documents, history, everything. Your knowledge is your currency in this field."
Her message of hope this Youth Month is to remember that June 16 is not just a date on the calendar. “The generation of 1976 fought so that you would have access. Now use it. Access education with hunger. Access opportunity with humility. Access power with purpose. The struggle of those who came before you was not for comfort, it was for potential. Your potential is not limited by your postal code, your family name, or your resources. It is limited only by your willingness to keep going. Keep going. South Africa needs everything you carry inside of you."
