The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Thapelo Amad, hosted a media launch of the Golf4Change Jozi 50th commemoration on Saturday, 30 May at the Soweto Country Club in Pimville, Soweto. The golf day is scheduled for 19 June.

The event was strategically earmarked for June, celebrated as Youth Month in South Africa. In commemoration of the month, and as the historical June 16 1976 Soweto students' uprisings turn 50 years this year, Cllr Amad formally endorsed the upcoming Golf for Change Jozi Golf Day as it meaningfully aligns with the City's social priorities and historical responsibilities.

He was joined by Ward Councillor Sebenzile Mabuza and former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs player Brian Baloyi. Teen golf sensation and amateur league golfer Jayden Hoskins (19) also graced the occasion to offer motivation to the young future golfers in attendance.

“This event takes place during Youth Month, a period of deep national reflection and renewed commitment to the development, empowerment, and inclusion of young people. This year carries even greater significance as we mark the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, a defining moment in our nation's history when young people stood courageously against injustice and inequality. The events of June 1976 were a turning point that reshaped the trajectory of South Africa," said Cllr Amad.

He added that through innovative, inclusive initiatives such as the Golf for Change Jozi Golf Day, the City can bridge these gaps in meaningful ways.

Jayden, from Bosmont, said he started playing golf at the age of three, and is off to the US on a full Student Athletes scholarship to Point University in Georgia, USA, in August.
