The lucky ones are born in March — and this year, the celebration is even bigger! As the iconic Johannesburg Zoo marks its 122nd birthday, all March-born visitors are invited to enjoy free entry throughout the month of March 2026. Simply present a valid proof of identification at the gate. (Standard entrance fees apply on Human Rights Day, 21 March 2026).

From humble beginnings in 1904 — with just 10 species on 200 acres of land — the Zoo has grown into one of Africa's leading conservation institutions. Today, it is home to over 274 species and about 2 127 individual animals, including some of the world's rarest and most vulnerable wildlife.

For more than a century, the Zoo has:

  • Played a vital role in local and international conservation programmes
  • Contributed to breeding initiatives protecting endangered African species
  • Maintained world-class veterinary care and animal welfare standards
  • Preserved one of the largest urban green spaces in central Johannesburg
  • Delivered impactful environmental education programmes
  • Built strong global conservation partnerships
  • Continuously upgraded habitats to reflect natural ecosystems
  • Hosted community events, night tours and awareness campaigns
  • Supported biodiversity research and wildlife studies

The celebrations continue with the Birthday Zoo Trot on Sunday, 8 March 2026. For just R78 per person, participants can choose a 5km or 10km walk or run. Registration opens at 07h00, with the race starting at 07h30 sharp. Afterwards, relax with a picnic and enjoy a crisp morning outdoors.

And there's more — visitors can enjoy R22 entry on the 22nd of every month until 28 February 2027.

Join the celebration. March babies, this one's for you!
