For most people, winning once is an achievement. For City of Johannesburg employee David Mongoenyane, winning three times in a row has become a testament to discipline, fitness and determination.
The 56-year-old, who started as Station Supervisor and is now with Finance Revenue Transportation in Region F1 for Rea Vaya, has secured first place in the men's walking category at the City of Johannesburg's annual Employee Engagement Day every year since he first entered the competition in 2024.
Mongoenyane says his winning formula lies in preparation and mindset. “I train before and after work, maintain a healthy lifestyle and approach the event believing that I can win," he says. “Prayer and staying positive also play an important role."
Born and raised in Soweto, Mongoenyane's passion for fitness started early through the Philani Joggers club in Orlando West. Growing up, he learned the value of resilience from his mother, whose faith and work ethic inspired him to push through challenges and remain focused on excellence.
His commitment to discipline extends beyond sport. Since joining the City of Johannesburg in 2013, Mongoenyane has built a strong career in security management. In his role as Station Supervisor, he championed Occupational Health and Safety and risk management while supporting a culture of professionalism and safety in the workplace.
Mongoenyane also believes fitness has a bigger purpose. “Physical exercise is essential for good health and overall wellbeing. It helps people stay healthy, focused and positive."
Away from work, Mongoenyane enjoys reading, music and jogging. He is also a passionate supporter of the Kaizer Chiefs, a team he says reflects the discipline and style he admires. He harbours hopes of the Phefeni Glamour Boys lifting the PSL and CAF trophies in his lifetime!
As he looks ahead, Mongoenyane hopes to continue prioritising his health while inspiring others to stay active and committed to their goals. His journey proves that success is not achieved overnight – it is built through consistency, determination and taking one step at a time.
