The Johannesburg Roads Agency's Operation Restore continues to fast-track road maintenance and service delivery across the City of Johannesburg, marking its three-year anniversary at the end of March 2026 with intensified work in Region F.
On 1 April 2026, JRA teams were deployed in Doornfontein, carrying out pothole repairs, deep patching, road and pavement reinstatements, and stormwater maintenance. In a co-ordinated effort, traffic signals teams also restored several traffic lights across Doornfontein and the greater Ward 123 area.
The two-week programme was officially launched at the corner of Beit and Nugget streets by the MMC for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, alongside JRA's executive management team. The launch aimed to engage residents and stakeholders while kick-starting operations on the ground.
Cllr Kunene said Operation Restore accelerates delivery. “Operation Restore's approach involves increasing the workforce capacity and resources by sourcing teams from each region to assist with road -related defects in one region for two weeks."
He highlighted road excavations in the inner city as a persistent challenge, noting their impact on safety and traffic flow, and called for stronger collaboration between JRA and other City entities to speed up reinstatements.
Community members welcomed the intervention, raising concerns about blocked stormwater drains, particularly along Nugget Street, which have caused flooding and limited access to residential buildings.
Region F Depot Manager Ritshidze Maswime outlined the scope of work, including maintenance around the University of Johannesburg's Doornfontein Campus and surrounding areas. Key issues include blocked stormwater drains due to littering and illegal dumping, potholes, and faded road markings along Nugget, Bok and Beit streets and Saratoga Avenue.
A site walkabout followed, with teams clearing rubble from kerb inlets while Augmented Field Services workers assisted with litter picking. By day's end, reinstatements were completed in Marshalltown, skofelling in City West, and patchwork repairs in Doornfontein, signalling steady progress in restoring critical road infrastructure.
