Precious Madiba moment as park revamp brings hope and new life to residents

Residents of Orange Farm, Drieziek Extension 4 in Region G are celebrating the transformation of Lilly Park Street Park – once an illegal dumping site associated with tragedy – into a vibrant community space that promotes recreation, safety and food security.

The revitalised park was officially unveiled on 23 July 2026 through a partnership between Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the City of Johannesburg's Sport and Recreation Directorate, with support from Pikitup, City Power, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD), Social Development, Johannesburg Water, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and CRUM.

The project was inspired by the community's determination to reclaim a site where the body of an infant was once discovered and transform it into a place of hope and healing.

Originally upgraded through the City's 100 Mayoral Sports Programme, the park received further improvements through SALGA's support. Upgrades include the rehabilitation of a community food garden, restoration of the soccer field, new playground and outdoor gym equipment, tree planting, park benches, litter bins and a high-mast light to improve safety.

The day's activities began with a 67 Minutes for Mandela Day campaign, during which residents, stakeholders and City officials planted trees and vegetable seedlings, painted playground equipment and participated in a clean-up campaign. GDARD also donated compost, fertiliser, gardening tools, seeds and vegetable seedlings to strengthen local food security initiatives.

Ward 4 Councillor Simon Molefe described the transformation as “a precious Madiba moment", saying it demonstrated that communities can reclaim neglected spaces through collaboration and determination.

The programme also featured performances by learners from Khanyisa Pre-School and Edu-Care Centre and a football match between Junior Stars and Young Tigers, showcasing local talent and the importance of safe sporting facilities.

MMC for Community Development, Cllr Thapelo Amad, said the City remained committed to investing in public spaces. “By transforming neglected spaces into safe recreational areas, we are investing in healthier communities, creating opportunities for young people and restoring the dignity of our neighbourhoods."
