The City of Johannesburg's Community Development Department, through its Library and Information Services directorate, partnered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa to educate senior citizens about stroke prevention and healthy living during Stroke Awareness Month. The Heart Health Awareness Programme took place on 12 October 2026 at Rabie Ridge Library, bringing senior citizens together to learn about the risks of stroke, the importance of early detection and practical ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The programme was facilitated by Ms Shonisani Nephalama, a qualified registered dietitian and nutrition science lead from the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa. Participants received information about different types of strokes, warning signs and symptoms using the FAST method, which is a simple tool used to recognise the most common signs of a stroke, prevention strategies and healthy eating habits.

The interactive session also provided an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and share their experiences. One participant expressed gratitude, explaining that the information had made her feel more empowered and less afraid because she now understood how to recognise stroke symptoms and make healthier lifestyle choices. She is also committed to sharing knowledge with her family and neighbours.

Senior Librarian Khalo Ronald highlighted the importance of the initiative, explaining that libraries have a responsibility beyond lending books. He said the library recognised that senior citizens could be vulnerable to conditions such as stroke, hypertension and diabetes, partly because of limited access to information.

Ronald further expressed pride in the partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, noting that collaboration between libraries and health organisations helps save lives by providing communities with practical knowledge. He reaffirmed the library's commitment to hosting programmes that educate, empower and uplift the people of Rabie Ridge, as part of its broader mission to promote literacy, wellness and community development.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, Cllr Thapelo Amad welcomed the initiative, emphasising the importance of bringing health education closer to communities, particularly senior citizens.

“Partnerships between libraries and health organisations support the City's commitment to building informed, healthier and more empowered communities. The programme also highlighted the role of libraries as accessible community spaces that contribute to residents' overall well-being," said Amad.

The successful outreach programme reinforced the value of community partnerships in promoting health awareness and ensuring that senior citizens have access to information that can help them make informed decisions about their health.
