The City of Johannesburg's Community Development Department, through its Library and Information Services directorate, continues to empower young people through reading and life skills development. On 9 October 2026, the Read to Lead programme at Lenasia Ext 3 Library provided learners with an opportunity to develop their communication skills, build confidence and learn through interactive activities.

The weekly programme goes beyond reading books by incorporating drama, unprepared speaking, creative writing, poetry and word games. These activities encourage learners to express themselves, improve their vocabulary and develop skills they can use in their everyday lives.

Ferhaad Vally, the programme facilitator, said the initiative had grown into a learning experience shaped by the interests and contributions of its participants. “What started out as a reading and life skills programme has evolved into a unique experience in which each session develops its own special character."

He added that allowing learners to influence activities had created a more engaging and meaningful learning environment, where creativity and personal development remained central to the programme. For the learners, the programme is also helping them overcome personal challenges. Sixteen-year-old Kandan Ahmed shared how the sessions has given him confidence in public speaking.

The programme also encourages community participation, with some older learners assisting with other library activities. This allows them to interact with different people, take responsibility and contribute to their communities.

The MMC for Community Development, Cllr Thapelo Amad, commended the initiative, emphasising the importance of libraries in creating opportunities for young people to learn and grow.

“By promoting reading, creativity and communication, we are investing in confident, skilled and responsible future leaders who can contribute positively to their communities," said Amad.
