In two weeks, South Africans will head to the polls for the upcoming Local Government Elections on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. Voting stations will open from 07:00 to 21:00. If you are a first-time voter or need a refresher, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has shared tips on its website to guide voters through the process.

Step 1: Find your correct voting station

Remember to check your voting station before you go. Open the IEC website, scroll down to My Voter Registration. Then enter your identification number (ID) for your registration status, voting station and ward details.

Step 2: Present valid ID at the voting station

When you arrive at the voting station, present your valid ID to the door controller. Accepted documents include a green barcoded ID book, smart ID card or temporary ID certificate.

The door controller will scan your document and give you a slip confirming that you are a registered voter. They will also tell you when it is your turn to enter and where to go, the IEC explains.

Step 3: Check your name on the voters' roll

Inside voters will proceed to the voters' roll table where an election officials will take your ID and check for your name and ID number on the segment of the national common voters' roll for that voting district.

Your name will then be crossed off to ensure you vote only once. An election official will also ink your left thumbnail with special ink that lasts for several days. The mark shows that you have voted.

Step 4: Collect your ballot papers

Voters will then receive their ballot papers. Each ballot paper has a unique number, and voters should ensure their ballot papers are stamped at the back, this is to verify that it was issued to them.

Step 5: Get your ID stamped

If you use a green ID book, an election official will stamp it to show that you have voted.

Step 6: Mark your ballot papers

Proceed to an empty voting booth and mark an X next to the political party or candidate of your choice. To avoid spoiling your ballot, make only one clear mark on each ballot paper. Once you are done, fold your ballot papers in half and leave the booth.

Step 7: Cast your vote

Once voters have made their marks ballot papers should be dropped through the slot in the top of the ballot box.

Step 8: Proceed to the exit

After casting your vote, you can proceed to the exit.

By following these steps, voters can ensure they are prepared when they arrive at their voting station. Make sure you have your ID ready, know where to vote and understand the process before election day.
