​​​​The City of Johannesburg is nearing a major milestone in the rollout of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C corridor, with the Sandton BRT roadways project approaching completion and the Katherine Street roadworks achieving practical completion.

Implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City's Transport Department, the project represents a critical component of Johannesburg's broader vision to deliver a more efficient, reliable, and integrated public transport system.

Katherine Street almost complete

The Katherine Street roadways project reached practical completion on 31 March 2026, marking a significant step toward the full realisation of the Phase 1C trunk route. Delivered on time and within budget, the project also recorded cost savings—an outcome that underscores the strength of the JDA's delivery model and the discipline of the project team.

Throughout implementation, the JDA-led team adopted innovative and adaptive project management approaches, particularly in navigating periods of unavoidable delay. Through careful coordination and proactive problem-solving, the team successfully managed complex interfaces, recovered time where possible, and maintained strong delivery momentum.

Along Rivonia Road, construction has advanced steadily, with the project now firmly in sight of completion. Remaining works are largely minor and include final civil elements and finishing activities, positioning the corridor in a near-ready state for full BRT operations.

With most roadway works now complete, only minor civil works and station service installations remain across sections of Sandton, and these are expected to be concluded in the near term. The upgraded corridor — featuring dedicated BRT lanes, strengthened road infrastructure, improved sidewalks, and enhanced public environments — will enable faster, safer, and more reliable transport between Sandton, Alexandra, and the inner city.

Delivering beyond infrastructure

​The project has delivered meaningful developmental and economic benefits. About 60 unskilled jobs have been created from project inception to its current stage, while local enterprises have been actively supported through participation in the works.

The project team's agile and responsive execution also enabled the temporary use of the route during key events, including the Joburg March and the G20 Summit, demonstrating the resilience and functionality of the infrastructure even prior to full completion.

Strong and constructive engagement between the JDA, stakeholders, and key partners —including the Sandton business district, regional structures, and residents — have played a critical role in maintaining progress and building confidence in the project.
