At Joburg Market, development is more than a buzzword, it is becoming part of the organisation's culture. Behind the scenes of one of the city's busiest economic hubs, the Skills Development function within the Human Resources Department is helping shape a future-ready workforce. Guided by findings from internal skills audits, the department has introduced targeted interventions aimed at closing skills gaps and unlocking employee potential, ensuring staff are equipped not only for today's demands, but also for future opportunities.

As a leading employer, Joburg Market continues to invest in its people. Through a discretionary grant from the Wholesale and Retail SETA, employees now have access to training and qualification programmes designed to support growth, career advancement and confidence in the workplace.

One of the standout initiatives is the Supervisory Training Programme, an NQF Level 4 qualification aimed at developing the next generation of leaders. More than just a training course, the programme is a strategic intervention focused on identifying and nurturing leadership potential long before formal leadership roles are assigned.

The initiative is driven by the vision of the newly appointed Executive for Corporate Services,  Ntombifuthi Khumalo, who is championing a workplace culture centred on empowerment, inclusion and continuous learning. Passionate about employee development, Khumalo is committed to ensuring that every staff member has access to opportunities that enable personal and professional growth.

“Our focus is on building people, not just filling positions," says Mohau Takadimane, acting Skills Development Facilitator.

Sandile Ngwenya, acting Skills Development Administrator, adds: “These opportunities are changing mindsets. Learning is now a continuous journey."

The Supervisory Training Programme is only one of several development initiatives currently underway across Joburg Market. An increasing number of employees are benefiting from funded training opportunities that strengthen skills, encourage ambition and promote self-improvement.

In a rapidly changing working environment, Joburg Market is making its position clear: investing in people remains one of the organisation's most powerful tools for long-term success. For employees, the message is equally clear: the opportunity to grow is already here.
