At 17:00 on Friday, 22 May 2026, the Zambezi Eagles, known for blending experienced senior national players with promising young talent, faced off against the Golden Fireballs, a high-energy Johannesburg team, at Ellis Park Arena. The match formed part of the exciting Power Week 2 fixtures of the Telkom Netball League (TNL).

Both teams are regarded as powerhouses in the Southern Region, and their clash during Africa Mon​th highlighted the unifying power of sport, particularly when guided by international sporting standards. Beyond the competition, these teams also carry the responsibility of strengthening regional integration among neighbouring countries.

Ahead of the match, Zambezi Eagles coach Mlambo Simbarashe shared his thoughts on the league. “We are glad to be here to play against one of the finest teams in Southern Africa. This league gives us an opportunity to try new combinations, field emerging players and see how they fit into the team. We have prepared well, and now it is time to see the results."

Speaking about preparations for the 2027 Netball World Cup, Simbarashe expressed optimism. “We are definitely looking forward to it. Once you have experienced the World Cup, you want to be there every time. Participating in this league forms part of our preparations."

Zambezi Eagles captain Progress Chikumba also praised the standard of competition.

“This is a very exciting league. The teams have really stepped up their game," she said, adding that team spirit in the Zimbabwean camp remained high, with players motivated and eager to enjoy their time on court.

When the whistle blew, the intensity was immediate. Sneakers squeaked across the court as the ball moved swiftly between players, often fiercely contested. Spectators erupted with excitement, especially during interceptions and moments of brilliant play.

The athleticism and versatility displayed on court were remarkable. Time and again, players demonstrated exceptional movement and positioning, showing a deep understanding of the geometry of the game. It was a fiercely contested and thoroughly entertaining encounter.

In the final five minutes, the Golden Fireballs proved technically stronger and secured a deserved 56–47 victory. Yet beyond the result, one of the most memorable moments came after the final whistle, when players from both teams embraced one another, regardless of the badge they wore. It was a powerful reminder of the sisterhood that sport fosters. What a beautiful game of netball on the African continent.

Tickets for the Telkom Netball League are available online at Netball South Africa for R100 per person per day. Children under seven enter free. The 2026 TNL Power Week 2 runs until Sunday, May 31 2026, at Ellis Park Arena.
