The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Geoff Makhubo, joined Police Minister Bheki Cele, Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko, and MMC for Public Safety Councillor Mally Mokoena as well as the police's top brass in an anti-crime blitz in Diepsloot, Region A, on Friday, 20 December 2019.
The minister was in town to inspire officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) who will be deployed across various crime hotspots ahead of the festive season.
In a show of force, the multi-agency force led by Minister Cele combed through the Mashamplani Informal Settlement in Diepsloot looking to root out criminal elements and inspect of service delivery shortfalls.
“People live in harsh conditions and their safety and livelihoods are compromised. We as law enforcement need to ensure that there's constant enforcement in these areas," said JMPD Chief of Police David Tembe.
Tembe added that although policing dynamics in informal settlements were totally different from the norm, law enforcement would have to do its best to maintain law and order.
Mayor Makhubo urged residents to stay safe and respect the rule of law.
“We call on all road users and pedestrians to obey the rules of the road, don't drink and drive, and please arrive alive. Let us work together with our law enforcement agencies to ensure we are all safe during this festive season," he said.
