Executive Mayor, Cllr Geoff Makhubo led a clean-up operation in the Central Business District on Saturday 4 December.
The mayor was accompanied by MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Cllr Mpho Moerane, MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Mally Mokoena, Speaker of Council, Cllr Nonceba Molwele and hundreds of volunteers.
Various City entities, including Pikitup, JMPD, Joburg Water and Joburg Roads Agency, took part in the multi-disciplinary effort to clean up Ward 59 which includes Rissik Street, Claim Street and Wolmarans.
Mayor Makhubo called on residents to look after their environment. “We've started a campaign in December last year to get our city clean. But it's not just about Pikitup cleaning up. We are trying to change people's attitude towards waste, towards littering, towards illegal dumping because. If you dumb, the health hazard comes back to you." He also pleaded with informal traders to clean up their surroundings.
The clean up on Saturday followed another successful clean-up operation undertaken on 28 December 2019 in which huge amounts of illegally dumbed waste were collected. A number of broken water pipes, illegal power connections and trading were identified for action by relevant entities.
The mayor said clean up campaigns will gain momentum in the new year
