With factors such as telecommunications infrastructure and costs playing a critical role in this sector, Joburg's contact centre industry has benefitted from the roll-out of the Seacom cable, which brings faster, cheaper international broadband to SA. SA's definite advantages include a time zone that is compatible with that of Europe, a relatively skilled and amiable workforce with a good command of English, new technology and active government support of investment. Further, the City is looking at its telecommunication and property rates as well as exploring the possibility of giving incentives for firms to be more competitive in this sector.
South Africa has also won international BPO awards: Offshoring Destination of the Year from the National Outsourcing Association (UK) 2012, the European Outsourcing Association 2013 and the hotly contested Skills Development Programme of the Year at the National Outsourcing Association (NOA) Professional Awards 2014, during which SA competed against leaders in the BPO space.
