The City of Johannesburg's Executive Mayor, Cllr Dada Morero, and MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, handed over 48 houses to qualifying beneficiaries in Dube, Soweto, ending a 15-year wait for the recipients.
Cllr Mabaso said: “Today we are allocating 48 units to the qualifying beneficiaries after 15 years of waiting. It's a historical day today for the residents of Dube. We are very excited."
“We would like to thank izinduna for safeguarding these houses from vandalism. They did everything to keep them safe while they were being refurbished. Today is not the day for speeches; it's a day to celebrate with the beneficiaries as they get their houses," said Cllr Morero.

Beneficiaries expressed joy and relief after years of waiting. Thomas Magasela said some of those who had waited for houses had passed away before seeing the day arrive.
“Many of our brothers died, but with God's grace, at least some of us who are left got a house," he said.
Thembinkosi Njoko, who said he had been living in Dube since around 1981, also expressed excitement at finally receiving his house. “I'm so excited that I got my house today," he said.
Bongani Shabangu, who moved to Dube in 2004, said residents had spent years pleading with the government for assistance. “All these years we've been complaining and pleading with the government to assist us, but today is the day. I got my house," he said.
He said he is looking forward to enjoying the comfort of his own home, including having a geyser.
The handover marks a significant moment for the beneficiaries, some of whom have waited decades for secure housing.
