The City of Johannesburg is advancing infrastructure development in Region G through the Finetown Road Upgrade Project, implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the City's infrastructure development arm. Asphalt surfacing is progressing alongside the construction of pedestrian walkways and supporting stormwater infrastructure to improve neighbourhood connectivity and access.

The project involves upgrading approximately 1.07km of gravel roads in Finetown, about 30km south-west of Johannesburg. The first phase focuses on Road D, Simmonds Street and Wilson Street, replacing gravel surfaces with durable asphalt to improve mobility, accessibility and the quality of the local road network.

Construction has progressed through key stages, including road stabilisation, the installation of stormwater infrastructure, kerb and channel construction, and the laying of interlocking paving blocks for pedestrian walkways. Asphalt surfacing marks a visible step forward in the upgrade, as the work moves from road preparation towards a more functional local road network.

For residents, the upgrades are intended to reduce the everyday difficulties associated with gravel roads, including dust in dry weather and muddy conditions during rainfall. The stormwater infrastructure will help manage runoff and mitigate erosion, while formal pedestrian walkways will provide better spaces for people travelling on foot. Together, these improvements will support safer movement and better access for residents, public transport, emergency services and municipal service vehicles.

The project is also supporting participation in the local economy. Through the JDA's Economic Empowerment Programme, it has created opportunities for 11 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and employed nine local labourers, extending the benefits of the City's infrastructure investment beyond the construction works.

The Finetown upgrade gives practical expression to the City's vision of a resilient, sustainable and liveable Johannesburg. By improving roads, pedestrian routes and stormwater systems in Region G, the City is investing in infrastructure that connects people to services, supports economic activity and promotes more inclusive urban development.

For Finetown, this investment is intended to improve how residents travel, access services and go about their daily lives. The project places essential neighbourhood infrastructure at the centre of the City's development efforts in Region G, supporting more accessible communities, safety and long-term development.
