The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development Planning in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Eunice Mgcina, conducted an oversight visit to several strategic Inner-City development and transport infrastructure projects currently being implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

The programme included site visits to the Chancellor House, the Gandhi Square Precinct BRT Stations, and the Selby BRT Depot, providing the MMC with an opportunity to assess progress, engage project teams, and evaluate the impact these investments will have on the broader revitalisation of the Inner City.

The oversight visit follows the State of the City Address (SOCA) delivered by Executive Mayor, Dada Morero, in which he identified the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Precinct as a central component of the City's programme for “the rebirth of the inner city" and reaffirmed the City's commitment to implementing urban management interventions that support a more connected, functional and opportunity-rich urban environment.

MMC Mgcina emphasised the importance of infrastructure-led development in unlocking economic opportunities and restoring confidence in Johannesburg's urban core.

“The inner city remains central to Johannesburg's growth and development agenda. Through targeted investments in public infrastructure, transport facilities, heritage precincts and public spaces, we are laying the foundation for a more inclusive, accessible and economically vibrant city," said Cllr Mgcina.

Chancellor House Precinct: The project seeks to preserve and enhance the precinct through public environment upgrades, pedestrian infrastructure improvements, streetscape enhancements, urban management, and tourism interventions aimed at improving accessibility, safety and visitor experience.

Gandhi Square Precinct BRT Stations: The station upgrades are designed to improve passenger safety, accessibility and operational efficiency while strengthening the overall commuter experience.

Selby BRT Depot: This depot is a strategic operational facility that underpins the functioning of the Rea Vaya network. It serves as a key centre for fleet management, vehicle maintenance and operational support services.

“By investing in quality public infrastructure, heritage preservation, efficient public transport systems and improved public environments, the City continues to implement practical interventions that support urban regeneration and contribute to building a more liveable and resilient Johannesburg," MMC Mgcina said.
