​When Africa's procurement and supply chain leaders gathered to define the future of the profession, Joburg Market didn't just join the conversation, it helped lead it.  At the 2026 Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) Connect & Engage Conference & Awards, Africa's largest fresh produce market joined some of the continent's most respected procurement and supply chain professionals, returning home with prestigious industry recognition while helping shape conversations about the future of the profession.

Held under the theme "Excellence That Moves the World," the two-day conference brought together some of Africa's most influential procurement and supply chain professionals to explore the future of the industry. From strategic procurement and digital transformation to governance, sustainability and leadership, delegates examined how procurement is driving economic growth and building resilient supply chains across the continent.

The conference featured keynote addresses by CIPS Global CEO, Ben Farrell, and SARS Commissioner, Dr Johnstone Makhubu, whose message captured the evolving role of the profession.​
"Procurement is not supporting development; it is enabling development," said Dr Makhubu, reinforcing the industry's growing influence in shaping economic progress.

Representing Joburg Market on day two was Supply Chain Manager, Boitumelo Lephadi, who joined a panel discussion on "Procurement & Supply Chain Talent for 2030 and Beyond." The discussion explored the importance of developing future-ready professionals equipped with technical, digital, ESG and risk management capabilities, while strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and professional bodies to ensure continuous learning and ethical leadership.

Speaking during the panel discussion, Lephadi said, "Tomorrow's supply chain leaders will be defined not only by their technical expertise, but by their ability to adapt, collaborate and continuously learn. Building future-ready talent is an investment that strengthens organisations, empowers people and enables sustainable growth."

The conference concluded on a high note for Joburg Market as the organisation received a Certificate of Recognition and two prestigious CIPS Awards: Procurement Team of the Year: Large Organisation and Best Approach to Risk Mitigation. These accolades recognise the department's commitment to excellence, sound governance, innovation and effective risk management.
