Joburg Market is taking its engagement with farmers beyond the market floor by connecting directly with the people who supply fresh produce from Limpopo. Led by acting Divisional Manager Cedric Nephawe, the Market's leadership team, including Chief Risk Officer Phindile Shabalala and Transformation Specialist Mbali Sibeko, recently visited farms across Limpopo.

The one-day engagement aimed to strengthen relationships with farmers while giving the team a better understanding of their experiences, challenges and the realities of moving produce from farms to the market.

The visit began at Gaza Beef, an aggregation point in the Greater Giyani Local Municipality in the Mopani District. Farmers consolidate their produce here before it is transported to ​Joburg Market by RBF Transports. This allows farmers to share transportation costs by combining their deliveries.

The team then travelled to the Vhembe District, where, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, it visited six farms in Thulamela Municipality. Five of these farms currently supply produce to Joburg Market. The visits provided first-hand insight into farming operations and the factors farmers consider when planning deliveries, including timing, logistics and profitability.

Among those visited was 39-year-old Nemaguvhuni Mavhuso, an irrigation scheme farmer from Mutshenzheni, who has supplied Joburg Market with green beans, chillies and oregano since 2010.

“I love the relationship that I have with the market agent I am currently working with. I started working with him in 2010," said Mavhuso.

Through these engagements, Joburg Market continues to listen to farmers, understand their experiences and strengthen relationships that support an efficient journey from farm to market.
