Joburg Market has officially commissioned 14 newly developed cold room facilities, marking a major step in its infrastructure modernisation programme and advancing its vision of becoming a fully integrated Smart Market. The cold rooms are aimed at strengthening food security, improving operational efficiency and enhancing the Market's cold chain capabilities.
The development forms part of Joburg Market's broader Smart Market Strategy, focused on upgrading infrastructure, improving service delivery, embracing innovation and creating a more efficient trading environment for stakeholders across the fresh produce value chain.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Nomoya Mnisi, commended stakeholders for their contribution to the successful delivery of the project.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to the board of directors, management, employees, contractors, consultants, market agents, farmers, buyers and all stakeholders whose collaboration and commitment made this project possible," said Cllr Mnisi.
“This achievement demonstrates what can be accomplished when we work together to strengthen food security, support economic growth and build a more resilient agricultural sector for the City of Johannesburg."
The new facilities are expected to improve the preservation, quality and shelf life of fresh produce, while reducing post-harvest losses and creating improved storage conditions for farmers, agents, buyers, retailers and other market participants.
The investment also supports the City of Johannesburg's economic growth agenda by strengthening support for local farmers and improving service delivery. As one of the continent's leading fresh produce markets, Joburg Market continues to invest in infrastructure that promotes a resilient, efficient and globally competitive agricultural ecosystem.
