Tsepo Mntungwa is helping to build a healthier, more active workforce at the City of Johannesburg, using sport and fitness as powerful tools for transformation and wellbeing.
Originally from Klipwal in KwaZulu-Natal, Mntungwa's journey is rooted in discipline, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility. Raised by his grandmother and single mother, he developed values that continue to guide his work today. “My family instilled in me the importance of education, sport and responsibility from a young age," he says.
He completed his schooling at Boksburg High School before furthering his studies in fitness, customer service and consumer science, with a focus on nutrition. This combination of skills laid the foundation for his career in both the corporate and fitness sectors.

Mntungwa began his professional journey in banking, contributing to the transition from Peoples Bank to Nedbank, and later moved into the fitness industry, where he worked as an instructor and gained management experience.
In 2005, he joined the City of Johannesburg at Metrobus. Today, he serves as a Fitness Instructor and Wellness Events Coordinator, playing a vital role in promoting employee wellness through organised sport and fitness programmes.
He coordinates a range of activities, including soccer, netball, volleyball, running and wellness campaigns, helping to foster teamwork and improve overall employee wellbeing. He also serves as Chairperson of the City's Netball League.
Mntungwa believes that workplace wellness programmes are essential in building a productive and resilient workforce. Through sport, employees not only improve their physical health but also strengthen collaboration across departments.
Despite challenges such as varying work schedules and encouraging participation, Mntungwa remains committed to expanding wellness initiatives across the City. His work highlights the importance of investing in employee health as part of broader organisational development.
Looking ahead, he envisions greater participation in wellness programmes and stronger support for workplace sport across all departments, contributing to a healthier and more connected City of Johannesburg workforce.
