Joburg Market welcomed a group of smallholder farmers on 16 July 2026 as part of an educational tour designed to strengthen their understanding of fresh produce markets and opportunities for agricultural growth. The visit was conducted in collaboration with the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture. It formed part of the departments' MICB workshop programme, which is aimed at capacitating smallholder farmers and equipping them with practical knowledge to improve their farming enterprises.
The tour followed a workshop during which farmers received information on market access, agricultural value chains and the importance of agro-processing. The sessions provided farmers with a clearer understanding on how to move beyond primary production and create additional value from their agricultural products.

The visit allowed farmers to experience how one of the country's major fresh produce markets operates. Farmers were able to observe the trading environment, engage with market processes and gain insight into the standards and systems required to supply produce to formal markets.
Tlou Kabe from the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development highlighted the significance of these monthly workshops in supporting farmers across the country.
“Through these monthly workshops, held in collaboration with provincial departments, we are committed to capacitating smallholder farmers with the knowledge and skills they need to access markets and grow sustainable agricultural enterprises," said Kabe.
He said the programme provides a valuable platform for farmers to strengthen their competitiveness in the agricultural sector.
Tumelo Aphane, a smallholder farmer from Carletonville, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. “I'm grateful. It has given me a better understanding of how to expand our one-hectare farm and prepare to supply our produce to the market."
