The City of Johannesburg's Department of Human Settlements, together with Emergency Management Services (EMS), visited Tornado Park Retirement Home in Regi​on C to educate senior ​citizens on emergency preparedness and evacuation safety. The session highlighted the importance of knowing what to do during an emergency evacuation, including keeping a “go-to bag" containing essential items.

“During an evacuation, no one should re-enter the premises. Everyone should gather at a designated safe meeting point, where a roll-call can be conducted to verify that everyone has safely evacuated," said Gavin Watson from EMS.

He demonstrated how to use a dry-powder fire extinguisher using the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the trigger and Sweep the spray from side to side. Gas stove safety was another key focus. Residents were advised to keep gas cylinders a few metres away from appliances and to exercise caution when refilling or exchanging cylinders.

“Gas cylinders should be kept a few metres away from the appliance being used. This can help in an emergency. When refilling your gas cylinder, I also advise against exchanging it for another one, as you may not know how long the replacement has been in use," said Watson.

Residents were further advised to unplug appliances during power outages to help prevent damage when electricity is restored, and to avoid overloading electrical plugs, which can trip circuits and create safety risks.

Wayne Fritz, one of Tornado Park Retirement Home residents, welcomed the initiative. “This was very informative and we will follow all the tips they shared with us today."

A follow-up first-aid session has been scheduled to further equip residents with essential emergency response knowledge.
