Last week, the Joburg Student Council held its highly anticipated junior council elections, marking a significant milestone for the youth of Johannesburg. Throughout their campaign season, students engaged in a vibrant democratic process aimed at encouraging their leadership skills and civic responsibility. The culmination of this exciting event was the official inauguration ceremony on August 4, 2026, at the New Ge​n Academy in Eldorado Park, where the newly elected members were celebrated and entrusted with their roles.

The inauguration program featured inspiring addresses from key speakers, including Mr Louw, Principal of New Gen Academy. The event was gracefully guided by Mbalenhle Dlamini, former Junior Speaker, who set the tone for the proceedings. The highlight of the day came when Cllr Margaret Arnolds, Speaker of Council, announced the newly elected Junior Council members, officially welcoming them into their respective positions of leadership.

The new executive team showcases a diverse array of talents and is poised to make a meaningful impact in the community. The newly elected executive team of the Joburg Student Council includes Cllr Ndivhuho Nthangeni as Junior Mayor, Cllr Katherine Doyer as Deputy Mayor, Cllr Reabetsoe Tau as Junior Speaker, and Cllr Emihle Mabaso as Deputy Speaker. Additionally, Cllr Kiara Smith serves as the Chief Whip of Council, with Cllr Nicole Oosthuizen as Chair of Chairs. Cllr Joshua Uwaezuoke has been appointed as MMC for Health, Cllr Letlhasedi Moeng as MMC for Environment and Infrastructure, Cllr Minenhle Majaja as MMC for Economic Development, and Cllr Omolemo Kale as MMC for Safety and Transport.

Brenda Andrews, the Council's co-ordinator, highlighted the significance of this event by stating, “This is an incredible opportunity for our youth to have their voices heard and to take an active role in shaping their communities." She further emphasised, “We aim to empower young leaders who understand the value of giving back and participating in their local government." These sentiments resonate throughout the Council's commitment to fostering active civic engagement.

The inauguration not only showcases the talents of these young leaders but serves as a reminder of the importance of youth participation in local governance. By engaging in workshops and outreach initiatives, council members acquire valuable leadership skills that contribute to addressing social issues in Johannesburg.
