Every third Tuesday of the month will be different for Strubensvalley Library as members come together to share their love of books, exchange ideas and build meaningful connections through a new community book club. Launched on 22 September, the book club aims to promote a culture of reading while creating a welcoming space where community members, particularly pensioners, can connect, learn and find purpose through reading.

The launch was attended by library users, community members, City of Johannesburg representatives, colleagues and sponsor Golden Tiger Realtors. Librarian Thokozani Mkhize welcomed attendees and described the initiative as a “dream come true", saying she had always wanted to establish a book club.

Members will meet on the third Tuesday of every month. The club is open to everyone, with members expected to read an allocated book before each meeting, share their experiences and exchange books to broaden their knowledge and exposure to different genres. Golden Tiger Realtors will provide sandwiches as refreshments.

A WhatsApp group will be created to allow members to vote on the club's name. The person whose suggested name is selected will receive a prize. The initiative also aims to address social isolation among older residents, many of whom said they wanted to spend their time doing something meaningful and enjoyable. Members also discussed ways to encourage more men to join book clubs and create a comfortable environment for open interaction.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad highlighted the important role libraries play as community learning spaces. “Libraries remain vital community hubs for knowledge, learning and enrichment."

Residents were encouraged to donate books and make use of the library's borrowing services. Residents can join their local library and access its lending services.

The launch ended on a cheerful note over tea and scones, with laughter and lively conversations among attendees. Members also wished Mkhize well as she prepares to fly to Germany to participate in a 42km marathon.

The book club now looks forward to its first regular gathering and to building a community connected by the simple pleasure of reading.
